Types of Outerwear Vests

Monday, August 30th, 2010

Starting with possible materials used in the manufacture of outerwear vests, one popular type of filler that is used as a stuffing between the inner and outer layer of the vest, is called down, which is very light and provides tremendous warmth to the wearer. However, down becomes useless when it is wet, also taking a considerable amount of time to dry. For this reason, it is used in combination with other waterproof materials to prevent the filler getting damp. Another possible type includes those that are manufactured with insulated shells, or the outer layer to be more exact. Materials used to produce these include polyester, fleece, cotton etc. Out of these options, fleece provides the most warmth; however, polyester is relatively cheaper.

Additionally, these vests also come in faux fur or leather. The former is much cheaper than the real fur vests and generally more durable. So it is not a bad idea to opt for these at one-tenth of the price compared to the real deal in most cases, as well as avoiding the animal cruelty factor. As for the latter, owing to their escalating popularity, and thanks to the styles of rock stars and bikers, these days, leather vests come in all sorts of varieties including calfskin, bison, suede and cowhide. With respect to the weather, for cold weather climates, most vests are quilted, lined and insulated and have zippers for closure. Whereas, for relatively pleasant weather conditions, some outerwear vests have button closures and some just hang open freely. These vests, more or less, just accessorize the wearer’s other clothes.

Vests come in unique styles and designs for both men and women, considering their body shape, size, color, material etc. However, some vests are unisex, implying no restriction of gender usage of that piece of clothing. Men mostly prefer formal vests with or without a suit, which are either made from silk or satin etc. Generally, women only wear outerwear vests for causal purposes. Lastly, another type of vest is the reversible one, which can be worn inside out and give two new looks with one vest. However, a drawback to this may the fact that since both the sides are made of soft lining, hence, for some wearers that might not be appropriate due to the difference in its look, lack of pockets etc.
